Share, bond and investments frauds

From time to time fraudsters seek to target the Prudential brand, its customers and shareholders.  These frauds include:

  • Offers to buy or sell shares/bonds at prices significantly different from market value.
  • Tempting investment opportunities using the Prudential brand that are too good to be true. 
  • Investment opportunities into fake businesses that falsely report being underwritten by Prudential. 

These fraudsters may use genuine company registration details, addresses and even the names of genuine employees. Fraudsters then use their own phone number, address and website details, claiming that the firm's genuine contact details are out of date.

Avoid becoming the victim of fraud 

You can avoid becoming the victim of fraud by spotting the warning signs. These include: 

  • Being ‘cold-called’ or receiving unsolicited mail.
  • Being placed under pressure to make a quick decision on a ‘time-limited offer’.   
  • Rates of return that are too good to be true (they may also offer more realistic returns to make their offer appear legitimate).
  • The business only advertises contact via mobile number, email or social media.  
  • Being asked to make an early payment to secure an offer. 
  • Receiving a guarantee that your investment is without risk. 
  • Fake websites may look genuine, but often lack details and interactivity. 
  • Prospectuses or websites may contain spelling mistakes.

 What can I do?

  • It is good practice to reject all cold calls. Regulated financial services companies are unlikely to make unsolicited contact regarding investment or sale opportunities. 
  • Check with your local financial services regulator if the firm is registered. Many regulators have a publicly available list of authorised firms. 
  • Seek independent advice before paying any money.  
  • If you think you have been the victim of fraud, please contact your local police. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland fraud should be reported to Action Fraud.
