Safe Schools
Building disaster resilience in education
In 2013, we launched Safe Schools in partnership with Save the Children and Plan International. This disaster risk reduction programme was inspired by the conviction that providing emergency relief is not enough. Resilience must be built before a disaster occurs.
Launched in the Philippines, the programme empowers students, teachers and governments with vital knowledge and skills, making entire communities more resilient in the face of natural disasters. Now a global initiative, it also supports the targets set out in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development Goals.
We believe every child deserves to feel safe at school and to be able to continue their learning, even when natural disasters strike. To make this a reality, our Safe Schools programme focuses on three key pillars:
Pillar 1
Safe learning facilities
Pillar 2
Disaster managements at school
Pillar 3
Risk reduction and resilience education
Water safety is one area the programme focuses on.
A Safe Schools backpack doubles as a lifejacket.
Interactive learning is key to the programme’s strategy.
The programme also helps embed useful life skills, such as basic first aid.
The programme is designed to be a fun, engaging and social learning experience.
We’re proud to support the revision of the global Comprehensive School Safety Framework (CSSF) and its related tools.
Our Safe Schools programme was featured in an episode of the World Health Organisation’s digital film series, 'Healthier Together: A Path to a Better World'.
